Phenological Checklist of Birds

There are 237 bird species that have been recorded on KSR lands from 1948 to the present. Eighty-eight of these species are confirmed breeding birds and another eight are probable breeders; these 96 confirmed or probable breeding species at KSR are denoted with an asterisk (*) in the checklist.

About 20% of the birds that occur on KSR are year-round residents. Another 10% are winter residents and about 25% are summer only residents. Nearly half (45%) of the birds are strictly migrants or temporary visitants.

The checklist contains the following notations for abundance: A = Accidental - extremely rare, not to be expected; extralimital in occurrence. R = Rare - few records, erratic in occurrence due either to very little suitable habitat or very low population densities. O = Occasional - irregular either during the seasons indicated or in annual frequency; present in low densities and records infrequent. U = Uncommon - present during the seasons indicated in low densities; regularly occurring but only in the appropriate habitat. C = Common - present in moderate to high densities during the seasons indicated and to be expected on almost any visit to the field. Abundance information is presented for each of four standard seasons of the year. A "blank" indicates that the species is absent at the indicated time of the year. The months of the year that correspond to the seasonal categories are as follows: "spring" = March - May, "summer" = June - August, "fall" = September - November, and "winter" = December - February.

The nomenclature and arrangement used follows the Check-list of North American birds, 6th edition, American Ornithologists' Union, 1983 and subsequent supplements through the 41st, 1997.

This checklist is based on field records of H. Fitch, R. Boyd, C. Cink, R. Johnston, M. Robbins, and G. Pittman and covers the period from 1948 -present. The list was compiled by G. L. Pittman (KSR Field Facilities Manager) with the aid of the aforementioned records and over ten years of field surveys conducted by the compiler from 1985 to present. For more information on birds at KSR contact Galen L. Pittman.
