Getting to KSR

DIRECTIONS FROM THE KU CAMPUS TO THE FIELD OFFICE OF THE
UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS FIELD STATION

The Robinson Tract, Fitch Natural History Reservation, Rockefeller Experimental Tract, Nelson Environmental Study Area (where the field office is located), and other elements of the University of Kansas Field Station are located just north/northeast of the Lawrence Municipal Airport, about a 20-25 minute drive from the Lawrence campus.

Driving directions:

  1. From the KU campus, proceed to Iowa Street (US 59 Highway) and head north to the junction of US 59 and US 40 (6th and Iowa streets).
  2. Take 6th Street east (right) about 1 ½ miles and proceed north (left) across the Kansas River Bridge (at Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence) through North Lawrence past the East Lawrence Turnpike exchange (I-70).
  3. About ½ mile north of I-70, turn east (right) at the junction of US 59/24 & US 40/24 (at the stoplight by the KDOT maintenance yard). Proceed 1 ½ miles east on US 40/24.
  4. Turn north (left) onto Douglas Co. 1600 E Road. Proceed a little over a mile and follow the road as it jogs west on top of the Mud Creek levee, cross the bridge over Mud Creek and continue north (left turn) on 1600 E Road at its junction with Douglas Co. 1900 N Road.
  5. About ½ mile north, at the top of the hill on the left side of the road, is the entrance/parking lot for the Robinson Tract. Continue north on 1600 E Road another mile (past the intersection of Douglas Co. 2000 N Road), around several curves and across another bridge where you will find the stone entrance to the Fitch Natural History Reservation (address 2060 1600 E Road) on the right.
  6. Continue up the hill into Jefferson County (Douglas Co. 1600 E Road turns into Wild Horse Road in Jefferson Co.). Continuing up the road, after several turns and about one mile, the entrance to the Nelson Environmental Study Area is on the right (address 350 Wild Horse Road).
  7. The headquarters, labs, and maintenance shop are about ¼ mile in from the NESA entrance gate on Wild Horse Road.
